Not having a good day today. I made some "snack mix" to take to Great Wolf Lodge when we go on Thursday. Problem is, I've already eaten a cup of it! It was all Food Lion's fault! They had the main ingredient (Sweet & Salty Honey Nut Chex Mix) on sale BOGO. I only need ONE package for the mix, but I couldn't resist getting a free bag! They've had it on sale lots of times over the past couple of months, and I've been able to resist those other times. The snack mix has one bag of the Chex mix, a box of Crunch N Munch, a bag of Honey Roast3ed Cashews, a bag of Honey Roasted Almonds, and a container of chocolate covered peanuts in it. What was I thinking!!!

Just thinking about and planning for this trip has worn me out! This morning, I got up at 6:30 and had breakfast, then went back to bed at 7:30 and slept in until 9:30. I feel like I could easily take a nap now, but I won't because my bedtime is only a little more than four hours away. My dining room is covered in things to go into the suitcase. The fridge is packed with refrigerated things that we'll be taking with us - juices and Yoohoo's for the kids, water and Diet Coke for me (I know, I know!), water for my husband, Mozzarella and Colby-Jack cheese sticks, salami sticks, big Slim Jim's, sliced apples with caramel dip, and Lunchables.

We are planning on driving through McDonald's and eating in the car on the way there. We're praying that we'll be able to get "early arrival" - won't know about that until tomorrow afternoon or evening. If we can get that, we can arrive at 11am. Otherwise, check-in isn't until 4pm, but you can arrive and use the water park any time after 1pm. Problem is, we can't leave all the food and drinks in the smoldering car for three hours. It's an extra $49 for early check-in, but it will be worth it for five more hours of playtime for the kids.

We'll probably either get the GWL pizza for the kids for dinner, or my husband might run down the road to Pierce's BBQ, and they can have hot dogs. There is a Dunkin' Donuts on site that is open from 6:30am-11:30am, so breakfast will probably be from there. Depending on what time we stay until, we might drive through Sonic on the way home. I know I could do a lot better on the food choices, but it will only be for a little over 24 hours, and it's all stuff that the kids would like and be excited about. We've never taken them on a "vacation" before, and we want it to be a really special time and all about them. I'll probably let them each buy something in the gift shop, too, and get a little something in the candy shop. Am I terrible to plan on indulging them so much? In "real life," I often tell then "no" to things, but I'm going to try to say "yes" as much as possible on this short trip.

Ok, that's my true confessions for the day. After not knowing how to record the snack mix, I didn't measure/weigh anything on the salad I had for lunch. I guess I'll just go in and put the same thing I had on my last salad, and I'll try to find something comparable for the snack mix and overstate the quantity to make allowance for the extra ingredients. Oh man, talking about that snack mix has got me wanting some MORE of it! I think this week is going to be a hard one!

Most places will hold your bags inside for you so that you can use the amenities while you wait to check in. Call and ask!

If you pack anything perishable in a cooler with ice it should be fine til you check in. You can always replenish the ice if it starts to melt. I don't know how old your grandkids are but fast food isn't always the only option. Lots of resteraunts have kid's menus & you could have healthier choices. I remember when I was 9 my grandparents took me to an Atlanta Braves game. On the way home we stopped at a roadside resteraunt & I ordered catfish. That has stuck with me for years!

Hopefully you will get an early check in, but like others said if perishables are in a cooler with ice for a few hours they should be fine. Have a Gr8 trip and don't sweat the small stuff!

Hope you have a wonderful trip. We are having a hard week also. My husband is having a biopsy tomorrow on a very swollen lymph gland under his jaw. I'm very upset about it. Please pray for us. By the way, Thursday is our 60th Anniversary.

We have taken the grandsons on several vacations and have found that they enjoy the time spent with us much more important than what we can buy them. Indulge them of course but don't worry about having to say no occasionally. Don't stress over any of it, try to have FUN! Go into it with the mindset of making good choices. Some will be better than others, so be it. Life is short, make those memories and ENJOY!

I concur - my grandparents used to take me and my cousins/siblings to the zoo once a year. I have no recollection whatsoever of the food we ate or the trinkets we bought, but very fond memories instead of the day spent with them. Adult me doesn't care if we had a Big Mac or an apple on that day, just that I got to hang out with them! Try to stop worrying about the food so much. =) I've noticed since you've stopped your fast that the focus of your posts have switched away from being able to physically keep up with the grandkids (you haven't mentioned your goal about climbing the stairs in a while) to how you're going to be feeding the grandkids. You have plenty of other things to deal with at the moment, but I wonder if in the future it might be helpful for you to talk with a professional about your relationship with food.

Yes there is so much to going on vacation! I hope you can relax once you get there. I think that you are being very mindful of how to take care of your grandkids and teaching them what to eat and when.

Sometimes you just have to live a little. And diet coke isn't that bad. The worst thing is that it may keep you craving sweets. Artificial sweeteners are some of the most studied substances on earth.

Spending time with grandparents is the BEST! They’ll have wonderful memories of this trip. Maybe you could pack some healthy options for snacks….clementines, the apple slices are good, just forget the caramel dip, plums, mini carrots with hummus. All of your snacks are loaded with fat, salt and sugar, so making good choices will be impossible for you (and your grandkids). :(

Just a note- I've noticed that very few grocery stores actually require you to buy 2 items to get the BOGO price, they just are 1/2 price. Have a great vacation!

I feel like you've got to cut yourself some slack here.. it IS a vacation after all! No guilting yourself! Enjoy what you've brought to eat/where you're eating (fast food is just for now, not everyday right? You'll be fine! Drink extra water :D ) Vacations are no guilt zones! The thing will be when you get back home, getting back to the healthy habits you've been practicing all along. It might help/make you feel better if you plan a few meals/make sure there are healthy foods/meals in the freezer for the first night home and next few days so you don't eat whatever is left or in pantry. That way you also don't also feel you have to do a major supermarket trip as soon as you get home. Regarding the snack mix (one bag of the Chex mix, a box of Crunch N Munch, a bag of Honey Roast3ed Cashews, a bag of Honey Roasted Almonds, and a container of chocolate covered peanuts in it) Maybe enter it all as a meal then divide it into portions. Give yourself a few (or more!) portions for just you, that way you can keep track and not overdo it. Hope my 2 cents helps a bit!! Have a great vacation! :D No guilt, just fun!

*Enter all the ingredients as a meal either in this database or if you do Weight Watchers or another program. Then divide it into servings - maybe 100-200 calories each? Use baggies. Toss them all in a bigger baggy for snacks for just you. :D
