Bone density scan results back. Im shocked. Did as a responsible precaution not expecting bad news. Turns out have osteopenia in hips and spine. Not cervical area tho. Need d3 k2 and something called ossopan to be added to my supplements (i just take fish oil, k, b12 currently) and HRT. About 6 percent chance of fracture in spine within 10 years. My aunt has had multiple spinal fractures and surgeries and mom and grandma had osteo so i dont know why im so surprised and unhappy about this. I feel like im getting so strong and yet…must also so weight bearing exercises so waiting on dr instructions on what those are in case trainer is not already incorporating appropriately. Im not happy. Guess this officially DOES make me old even tho i dont REALLY believe that i am. Well happy Monday🤔. Does anyone have experience with ossopan?

What you are experiencing starts waaay back when you were a little girl. Childhood nutrition is crucial to the outcome in our older years— especially for women and bone density. Sort of a— you are what you have been eating sort of thing. Yo-yo dieting, fad diets, certain medications and disease processes cause bone demineralization. Hiking/walking is a wonderful adjunct for bone health. We need that bone pounding activity to strengthen our bones. Also why hiking and playing outside is so good for our kids.

That sounds like really tough news to hear, I’m sorry you have to process that. It’s probably in my future as well since the women in my family tend to end up with osteoporosis. But knowing about it now means you can do whatever you can to make things better now and in the future. Information is power

You have this and I reversed my osteopenia. I do not however have experience with ossapan? Is that a patch, shot or daily drug. I did take Fosamax for 5 years after my cancer treatment. Fosamax had shown encouragement of the cancer not spreading to the bones and since I had osteopenia my Oncologist suggested I take it. You can only be on it for 5 years and it was a daily pill. Totally improved my Dexa scan! My primary stated as long as I kept up my weightlifting that I should not have any issues. BTW - looking gorgeous and arms look awesome!!!

Body fat plays a role in osteopenia risk and you can actually decrease your risk by not being underweight or having a very low body fat percentage. Exercise is also important. As far as that supplement what I know is if you are taking other supplements you can be overloading and that can cause calcium depletion. One example is if your dietary intake of phosphorus and calcium are not balanced correctly that will deplete the calcium in your body and doing the exact opposite of what you want to happen. I would proceed cautiously and have a dietary analysis of what your nutritional intake is from the foods you eat and the current supplements you take. High protein diets whether from chicken or dairy/whey proteins tend to be very high in phosphorus. Good Luck.

6% chance of fracture in 10 years? That's pretty low. Don't worry about those stats. Mine show 80% chance of death within 10 years of my lung clots. Just keep up the good work and enjoy life.

There is also some evidence that supplementing your calcium intake can actually be detrimental to your heart health. So by popping calcium tablets your bones may get stronger but it can be an overload and be calcifying in your arteries. There are apps where you can log your dietary intake just like FS but have much more detailed info for vitamin, mineral and nutritional intake in addition to macros.
