Yesterday, I left my journal when an earthquake hit.
I was experiencing a foreshock not realizing it.
The back door rattled so hard it was like someone was trying to get in. I was very spooked it was 4 AM my husband was asleep and I thought maybe it could be my son, but there was no other noise after that, so I got my pepper spray ready and was on the alert. Thank goodness for the Neighbors app, someone had texted there had been a little earthquake so I settled down and I went back to business.
Well, lo and behold about a half hour later we had a large earthquake where the whole house rattled. I was screaming, my husband jumped out of bed, and then it stopped.
It wasn’t that big, but I had never ever experienced a foreshock before, so it was very interesting.

Fortunately, California earthquakes have been a bit out in the desert, so people don’t get hurt.

But a few snakes were rattled😆

When we lived out on the West Coast the first earthquake, we experienced was shortly after we moved to Monterey. We lived in San Jose for a year prior and never felt one. My wife was upstairs and the whole place started to shake. I thought it was my wife upstairs exercising. I yelled at her to take it easy - lol - she said she was taking it easy she was taking a nap and I woke her up. It was an hour later when we realized what happened. Being from Western NY, earthquakes were a very different experience for us. After that one, we had at least one a month for close to year. Most were centered in Castroville. We never experienced a major one until our second when I was stationed at Ft. Ord. That one up north around 1980, close to San Fran and felt all the way down the coast. It was over a 5. I can only image what a 6 or 7 must be like. The 5 damaged the Embarcadero Freeway and several bridges in the Bay Area. It was quite an experience.

You were really living in earthquake country!!! It’s unbelievably hard to believe Skydiverjim, that the earthquake was not a seven. My husband was walking in a quiet warehouse closing up, full of pipes and all the pipes rattled and he felt it a little bit, of that very quake way down in LA. Very very scary, many people died in that quake that wasn’t even a seven. 😞 That freeway is gone now it’s been demolished. I still can’t get over it wasn’t a nine! You have had such an interesting life! I rather live here than Japan! Now those are earthquakes! Have a happy Tuesday - earthquake free,😆

😮 Shrew I’m glad you & your family are safe. That’s scary! I lived in California for a short time in Oceanside & In Orange County. I experienced one small earthquake when I was closing up the store at work. It sounded like a freight train was going through the building, some things fell off the shelf but it was small and nobody got hurt. Very scary. As much as I love California it just was way too expensive, But very beautiful. Happy Monday have a great week & stay safe! 🎉😊🌻🌈

Thank you Damablack! To tell you the truth I really hate almost everything about California except the ocean, the mountains, the trails, the exceptional weather!! Right now, I’m saving up to pay for the damn property taxes! You own a house, I don’t think so!!! You don’t pay your taxes - thousands in property taxes, they can take your house, maybe worth millions as a result!😡 But, dang if you just can’t beat the ocean and the mountains, the trails and the weather - they got you right there!😞 Anyway, have a Happy Tuesday!👍😊

I've been in a few small earthquakes in Alaska, nothing serious, but I've seen the evidence of the 1964 9.2 earthquake there, and it is very sobering. To see places where there w as uplifting of 9 or 10 feet, and where the tsunami washed Valdez away really make you worry about heavily populated areas of California. So glad this one wasn't serious.

We live in Los Angeles and had more damage to our house than it was worth, by the Northridge earthquake in 1994. Our house will never be the same but I am still glad to have it! Anything less than a 5 we call a "foot massage".

Oh my! Believe it or nit, there is a fault line in Missouri and when I lived in St. Louis, there was a minor little shake and it was freaky! I cannot imagine the "real" quakes

I'm a native Californian I felt the quake, lifted my head off the pillow considered checking my phone to see where is was but I said nope to myself and then went back to sleep. We do have an extensive earthquake kit, and we have shoes and water in our trunks of our cars and a phone number out of state to check in on. We have a plan and I know how to turn my gas off if needed. That's really all you can do. Oh and most importantly we have earthquake insurance. Hang in there people stay calm and carry on.

I'm in San Diego and didn't feel a thing. But then, I sleep like a rock. You could run a hairdryer in my bedroom at 4 a.m. and I wouldn't hear it. Are you new to California? Quakes are pretty normal occurrences. They startle pets more so than people.

Thank you Ettenauj!!! 😊 I have seen the pictures from the Alaskan earthquake Shirlfleur, and it is shocking and amazing!! That was known as the Good Friday Earthquake, I bet a lot of people prayed that day.🌹🥺 Wow, Devops, you felt it way out in the Valley, remarkable!😮 My adrenaline did get going Rosie. as I screamed, but as my husband will attest to, I am always being spooked and screaming.🙃 You're so funny Smowwhite with the foot massage! My brother had a mansion when the Northridge earthquake hit, he had a lot of insurance, they didn't pay for damages till decades later! 😡 I get very spooked by earthquakes Chevre, you would think I would be used to it by now.😄 Thank you Jenny and Gib🌸🌸🌸 My husband would have done the same Little Red Fox, but his crazy wife screamed him out of bed. We also have emergency packs, yet haven't invested in earthquake insurance just yet. We do have a wrench by the backdoor for the gas though. Hope we never need it.🥺 You made my day JustBananas with your hairdryer comment! You should see me when there is thunder and lightning. CRAZY LADY! 😆🌸👍

Grew up on CA and two earthquakes have spooked me. The 89 earthquake and the Napa on a few years ago.

We had an earthquake here last year. It's so weird. Our camper is bouncy regardless, so I'm surprised I noticed it, but it was strong enough and lasted more than a minute, so I noticed. Glad you're safe.
