Day 5 of a planned 5 day ‘no solid food’ fast
Blood sugar 104 mg/dL

Went to the gym yesterday. Someone was using the "Smith Machine"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smith_machine that I normally use, so I had to do my squats and deadlifts using a normal bar. I only lifted 180lbs but it is still kinda scary because you have to balance the par moving left and right as well as preventing yourself from falling backwards while doing 30 squats...

I decided to eat OMAD (One Meal A Day) next week. I want to 'bulk' up my muscles, so I need to lift heavier weights (200lbs+). To do this, I need to fill my muscles with sufficient glycogen. To do this I must consume more carbs and eat a 'calorie surplus' and 'gain weight'. OMAD should allow me to consume more calories, but, no go crazy and get fat.

If my weight gets too high (180lbs+) I will just go on an aggressive fast.

but do you need the carbs or just the calories?? sorry your machine was taken, I know that has to be uncomfortable with that much weight. being safer is a good choice.

@Baskington - I think I need the carbs and the calories. I defiantly need the carbs. After so many experiments I know that without 'carbing up' I can't lift 'heavy' (I CAN still lift more than my own weight without 'carbing up', so I can see why people say you CAN lift and stay 'low carb'). The reason I say I need to ALSO 'gain weight' is that I can only gain or lose. I just can't do both at the same time. I can't lose weight and 'carb up' at the same time. Even with a calorie deficit, if I consume 150+ carbs I-will-gain-weight. Yes it will be mostly water-weight but after multiple days it will-turn-into-fat. My weight loss was slowed this week and if you notice, my fasting glucose levels were higher this week (than normal). This tells me my body is still producing insulin to try to bring the blood sugar levels down. I suspect that while my carbs were 'ok' this week, my protein intake was WAY higher than normal. High protein WILL also cause insulin production. I think massive amounts of insulin makes my body inefficient at brining my blood sugar down. This is why my diabetic family members on insulin are happy when THEIR fasting blood glucose levels are around 100. I am like "Seriously! My normal glucose reading is 89 in the morning! Your doctor is F'king' trying to kill you!" - - Anyway, I am going to go on a run this morning and tomorrow morning to help get things back to mormal...

Wear a Calorie Monitor when you workout & it helps determine the extra amount of calories you can consume. This will improve your strength (weightlifting) & control the weight gain.

@srossca - I do wear a monitor, but, trying to get it to pump the results into FatSecret doesn't work well (It is a Microsoft Band so I have to go to google them Samsung then to Fat Secret and the link keeps breaking). But, during the workout I use it to monitor my heartrate and I start a new set as soon as I see it fall below a certain level. I also look at the colorie burn and comare it to what fatSecret says.

protein does raise glucose but it does not necessarily cause insulin production. I know you do have this problem, but on me, if I eat and have any protein my glucose rises and stays steady for hours if I don't exercise. I don't think I am producing insulin, but I could be wrong. I still have been testing regularly during the day spot checking what different things I am doing effect my blood readings. Even on my high calorie days when I have way over my calories, little to no exercise I don't tend to gain weight. Granted I have no carbs and higher fat level too. Have you done blood tests during the day to moniter how your blood level adjusts during the day with NO exercise?? Your fasting days, not eating days. You have been low carb and working out combined with tons of exercise. I would think you could be healing your system. I am curious not questioning on this point. There are not many people to ask to check out these things. some of us are more geeky on these things than others.

Great job with those weights even without the machine - glad you were able to do it without hurting yourself! I am so interested to see how OMAD works for you - what time of the day are you planning to eat? I know you said that once you start it is hard to stop - just like me :) Enjoy the upcoming weekend!

@nikeit - Oh! I can ONLY OMAD before bed! No way could I eat my *one meal* at say Lunch?? As if I could stop eating! Hahaha

@baskington - I have tested during the day. When eating I spike like normal and then it comes down. Unless I 'carb up' then I spike, come down a little, but stay high for a day or more. When I am not eating it is basically flat.
