Went to the doctor this morning to inquire about the hair loss. They took some blood to make sure all my organs are functioning properly and gave me the name of a hair health product that you spray on - it was called Aveda Invati. It is a 5-oz spray that you apply to the scalp every day and it is supposed to help you hang onto the hair you DO have and to thicken thinning hair. That stuff was $57, so I'm not getting it.

They also recommended a multivitamin that will help to get all my nutritional requirements met. The one the PA said to get was for "Garden of Life Vitamin Code" for "Women 50 & Wiser." It was $72, but there was one for just "women," which had exactly the same ingredients, in almost the exact same quantities. That one was "only" $55 for a 2-month supply, so I ordered it and it will be here tomorrow. Don'tcha just LOVE Amazon Prime!?

She said to make sure that I was getting in enough protein, so I'm going to start being more mindful of that.

This morning, I had an enlightening thought. I've been beating myself up about eating so much Dave's Killer 21 Whole Grain & Seeds Bread with Butter - assuming that it was not the "right" thing for me to be eating so much of. But, it occurred to me this morning that maybe my body is craving those things in particular because it is something that I NEED, physically, at this time in my life. Just a thought. Bread has always been a major staple throughout the ages, and this particular bread is better FOR me than just eating white bread. Some would even argue that eating butter is better than eating margarine. I think I'll go with those thoughts for a couple days, just because it makes me feel kinder toward myself than looking at the bread/butter as a "forbidden food."

One thing I DO want to change, though, is to get back to drinking water! I'm not planning (yet) on giving up on Diet Coke, but I should have that "in moderation" with an abundance of water. My knees feel better when I am drinking water, and I know it is good for me. So far, I haven't been able to get myself back into that groove. That was one thing I was VERY good about when I was doing the extended fast, getting in 10-12 cups of water most days. I'll have to pray for God to give me back the DESIRE for water. I've got seventy 8-oz bottles in my kitchen, just sitting there waiting for somebody to drink them.

have you tried biotin? I heard it's good. Personally I refrain from tying my hair at all fir weeks because my hair is too thin and breaks and I never leave it wet.

If you don't restrict food, your body will tell you what it needs.

I take 10,000 mcg of Biotin every day and it has really helped my hair growth. When I was taking care of both my parents a few years ago I lost a lot of hair (I believe from stress). My hair was coming out by the handfuls. Biotin worked for me.

I was losing my hair when I turned 50. I've been taking biotin 1000 mcg and using Nixon hair products. which has helped me a lot. my hair started growing back and getting thicker again. I also drink 8 to 10 20oz bottles of water a day because I had kidney stones. The water and protein does help my knees too. I had total knee replacement a year ago. good luck.

I have read that rosemary oil is good for thinning hair. Best of luck!

Did you ask doc or pharmacist about hair loss side effects of meds. My hair was coming out in handfuls until I stopped an offending med. Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the med.

I don't take any medicine. So there are none to make me lose my hair. My doctor said it could be heretary. But no one in my family has lost hair. She also says as you get older, your testator gets low and that helps hair growth. So hair grow slows down. I take the biotin vitamin and had to up it to 5,000. But I'm afraid to up it any more because biotin is considered a calcium. And some people get kidney stones from calcium. The niacin shampoo and conditioner helps too. I use it once a week. I hope this helps. Good luck.

@JayeB13998, I forgot about the water yesterday, but I've already drunk 1/2 cup today - woohoo! It's a start, and I'll drink more before the day is done. @puffytn, I ordered the Biotin yesterday, which seems like an extra wise move, since I got a call from the doctor today saying my calcium is low and a liver enzyme is high (which can be caused by the low calcium). If the Biotin is a calcium, that should help, along with the Vitamin D3 the doctor suggested, which I just ordered. @erikahollister, thanks for the vote of confidence. Turning it around seems pretty far away right now, but things could change unexpectedly at any moment.

Debbie, I have the same condition, as do many people who have had aggressive, sustained weight loss. Most bariatric surgery patients have it as well. It's called telogen effluvium. Basically, stress from severe calorie restriction causes stress to the body, causing more hair than normal to enter the shedding phase. The condition may even cause the hair to fall out in pretty large clumps. Luckily, the condition is temporary and should return to normal in 9 months to a year. It can also be caused by illness, fever, and other life stress - lots of people have had hair loss due to COVID.

I'm thinking your extended fast is the culprit and it's going to take some time for your hair to come back.

water yourself like a plant Debbie. Constantly drink water so that your body gets used to it and build up from there. As 1/2 cup is your start then 1/2 cup it is all day long. Take a little more each time and you will eventually become a 'big gulp' Your skin will plump back up and your hair will grow again. With the little water you drink currently, your kidneys aren't sharing at all - their on survival mode. Peace.

If you walk or stand alone and get leg cramps which I use to. I started to take calcium. Magnesium and zinc. Which helps with leg cramps. I get the vitamins at Walmart. The bottle has all 3 of it in one bottle, cheaper that way.

Hi Debbie! If you haven't already, maybe get checked at your next doctor appt. for vitamin D deficiency. I have always had a ton of thick curly hair. But at one point I was losing it by what seemed like handfuls when I brushed it or washed it. And I was shedding everywhere. Turned out that I had the lowest vitamin D my doctor had ever seen, lol. Anyway, it's just a thought. It may not be the main cause, but it could be a contributor to your hair issues. :)
